Verkada Local Streaming

Because our cameras primarily communicate to an online console, there are a couple different ways to approach using a monitor as a visual deterrent.

These are our two best methods:

  1. If you are on a hardline, this method is the easiest. You would simply need to purchase an Apple TV and connect it to the same LAN as the cameras.
  2. If you are using a hotspot (Optconnect, Avanti Cradlepoint, etc), you can still use an Apple TV to view the cameras through the LAN. This should be doable via connecting the Apple TV to the PoE switch, router or network.

Both methods require purchasing an Apple TV and downloading the Verkada Command App.

Once this is done, you can create view any number of feeds on the Apple TV monitor. This is accomplished by customizing "grids" (essentially a video wall) of your video feeds on the Verkada Command through your browser.

As long as the Apple TV device is not turned off, it will continue to stream through the LAN even if there is no connection to the internet. This same principle also applies to the Verkada App and Verkada Command. As long as they are connected to the LAN, and not shut off or refreshed, they will remain connected to the camera even in the event of an internet outage.

Concerning Hotspot Bandwidth

For security and maintenance reasons Verkada cameras will attempt to maintain a connection with their video streaming server. Thus, as long as there is an active internet connection, the lowest amount of bandwidth used per day averages in at about 20MB per day (~140MB per week, ~ 560MB per Month). So, this would be the minimum amount of data allocated to simply have a camera online (only storing media locally, with no cloud storage).

A solution to maintain live streaming to a monitor and subsequent local stream recording, would be to simply disconnect the camera from your hotspot (optconnect, avanti cradlepoint, etc.). This will allow you to still use your camera without incurring bandwidth usage. So long as the camera, Apple TV, and network adhere to the scenario described in the first section, the camera will still record to its own internal storage and stream locally to the Apple TV and monitor.
