In 2019, our founder Mac, who had previously created AI technology for analyzing basketball games (detecting actions like rebounds, assists, and steals), was approached by an investor who saw potential similarities between detecting stolen basketballs and stolen retail items. The transition from sports to retail began when this investor inquired if Mac’s AI technology could be adapted to address theft problems in retail spaces. This innovative application of sports AI to retail loss prevention proved successful, launching what would become a revolutionary approach to retail security.

Now
Panoptyc now protects over 20,000 stores and 50+ major retailers’ facilities, specializing in cashier theft detection and employee theft detection through after-the-fact review, particularly in partnership with major food service companies. From employee break rooms to cafeterias, the technology has proven highly effective, and the company is now positioned to evolve from post-incident analysis to real-time theft detection, with plans to expand from back-of-house operations to front-of-house applications like self-checkout theft detection and shoplifting prevention.
